A Homey Italian Dinner with the Gals at Al Borgo Singapore

One does not need to travel far to feel at home. Sometimes, being surrounded with the right people in the right place can most certainly make one feel at home. We made plans for an intimate dinner with my Graduate Studies circle in this place called Al Borgo. I didn't know what to expect about the place except for the fact that they serve Italian food.

To my pleasant surprise, Al Borgo was more than just the typical Italian restaurants buzzing with people animatedly talking with one another, Italian music playing in the background, and the sound of plates clanking from the kitchen. That August evening, Al Borgo became a home of laughters, dreams, and life plans.

The first thing I noticed about the place was that it has a cozy, warm atmosphere that creates this intimate feeling of comfort. Adorned with various bottles of wines, Al Borgo made me want to stay there longer and chat with my friends about their most inspiring moments in life or when they were at their best. It has the kind of effect that doesn't intimidate you with luxury but also has a subtle charm that makes you want to linger in the place.

The staff was impeccably attentive and quick to fill in our glass of water. He interacted with us as though we have been consistent and valued guests in his vineyard.

The food at Al Borgo tasted unforgettably delectable. We ordered this Caprese con Mozzarella di Bufala which is a platter of Bufala mozzarella cheese bedded in tomato rings for an appetizer along with crip and savoury Garlic Bread.

The next few moments after this was hilarious and lesson-learned for me. The group asked each of our preferences and somehow the words evaded me for a second there and forgot to throw in the phrase "allergic to prawns" and just nodded to the word prawn.

When our next order arrived, it was the Gamberi Aromatizzati - pan fried prawns in garlic and cherry tomatoes in bisque sauce - and then I said, "Oh! I'm allergic to prawns." Too late for me to say. It was then I realized that I must not be afraid to say no.

And so, the evening continued. I shared the story of when I started to become allergic to prawns and it made me feel nostalgic! The dish tasted nice, as my friends expressed.

When the appetizers left the plates and into our palettes, it was now time for the main dish!

I chose to enjoy the Spaghetti alla Carbonara that evening. Served on a black, ceramic plate with parmesan cheese sprinkled on the sides, this carbonara tasted creamy and heavenly. I paired this with an Italian red wine, the Riparosso Montepulciano DOP 2015, which I definitely enjoyed!

Al Borgo serves plenty more choices of delectable food and drinks that definitely satisfies. As we were enjoying dinner, Jana shared about her scuba diving adventures, Angela gave us a glimpse of what she wanted to tick off her bucket-list, and Winifred recollected her experience about getting lost in a new city overseas. As for me, I was savouring the moments that I felt at home and inspired being surrounded with these gals from Positive Psychology, who are really close to my heart.

Before we could call it a night, Al Borgo brought us this complimentary dessert. It was a lovely-tasting chocolate tiramisu cake with vanilla ice cream. As the saying goes, "There is always room for dessert!"

We shared this beautiful piece of chocolatey goodness as we sighed and said: "I'm definitely coming back here. This place is beautiful!" We turned to Winifred and gave her our gratitude as she suggested that we meet at Al Borgo.

One does not need to travel far to feel at home. Sometimes, being surrounded with the right people in the right place can most certainly make one feel at home. That August night, I definitely enjoyed my dinner with much love and gratitude with three of these lovely ladies - Jana, Angela, and Winifred in a homey Italian restaurant called Al Borgo.

Hope you'll enjoy this place as much as we did.

Love,
Mary Jedde
